Chapter 12

Dylan sat on top his horse, and even though they had been riding for an hour now, he still couldn’t believe he was riding next to Hephaestus and Theseus. It was all so surreal.

“How many horses have come up missing, Dylan?” Hephaestus asked quietly.

Dylan couldn’t speak. This was the son of Hera and Zeus. Never in a million gazillion years would he have thought to be having a conversation with Hephaestus.

Then again, if he didn’t say something, he couldn’t really call it a conversation, could he?

“Dylan?” Hephaestus said in confusion.

With heated cheeks from embarrassment, Dylan whispered, “I’m really sorry. It’s just…well…I mean…”

Dylan took a deep breath and let it our slowly, then whispered, “When I took Mythology in college, I was so fascinated by all of the Greek Gods stories. Well, them and the Roman Gods. You guys are so much alike and yet different. However, when everyone was writing there papers on Hercules, Zeus, Apollo, Jupiter… well, I found myself drawn to your story.”

Hephaestus’s surprise was clear when he gasped, “Mine?”

Nodding his head, Dylan explained, “I found that you and I were very similar. I mean, I’m no God, but…well, I don’t know how to say this gently, but it was like both our moms just tossed us away.”

“From what I heard, she didn’t just toss you away. Ceres did what she thought was best to keep you alive.” Hephaestus’s voice was soft.

Sighing heavily, Dylan answered, “Yeah, that is what she said.”

Ducking under a large branch, Hephaestus asked, “You don’t believe her?”

Snorting, Dylan said, “Oh, I believe her, I just don’t believe it was the right thing to do. At any time she could have come to me and explained things. She chose not to do that.”

Hephaestus kept looking around for possible danger. “Dylan, it is not always easy being a God. Constantly, they are fighting for power and control. Look at what has happened to my father. His own wife and nephew killed his one true love and imprisoned him, and they did it for the powers the staffs will bring them and the control over the universe. She just wanted to give you a chance to live a safe, normal life.”

Dylan turned to Hephaestus in anger. “You have got to be shitting me. My life sucked. One foster home after another and the abuse was in all of them. If it wasn’t for finding Hunter, I would have most likely died of hunger or dehydration.”

Nodding in understanding, Hephaestus said, “Ceres had no way of knowing that was going to happen. She did everything she could to try and find you. She even went to Zeus to ask for his help.”

“She did?” Dylan asked in surprise.

Nodding, Hephaestus said, “Yes, she did. I was with my father the day she came to him and told him her story. She thought, by doing so, Zeus might locate you. He tried, but even he had no knowledge of what your father had done and his contacts in the lands below had no answers.
